Governor Support Service

What do we offer?

The Governor Support Service provides training, guidance and support to clerks and governors to enable them to fulfil their statutory duties and be confident in providing robust challenge and support to school leadership teams. Ofsted recognise the key role of governors and will expect to find evidence of governors’ impact on strategic leadership. Schools are encouraged to invest in the development of their governors to ensure they can make a full contribution to this key role.

Why choose us?

The Governor Support Service has over fifteen years’ experience in supporting clerks and governors and has extensive knowledge in legislation and clerking matters.

Chair of Governors feedback: 'Thank you all at Governor Support for all your assistance, guidance and considered advice over the last 7 years. This has been invaluable to me and the governing body.'

What is provided free?

  • management of the appointment of Local Authority governors
  • establishment and update of Instruments of Government for Local Authority maintained schools

What is chargeable?

In response to the wide responsibilities placed on volunteer governors, the Governor Support Service provides a wide range of central training courses keeping governors and clerks up to date. Training is provided centrally or sometimes at schools for individual governing boards or as one to one sessions particularly for clerks and/or chairs. Examples of our services include:

  • maintenance of membership records of the governing board

  • regular briefings sent by email to the clerk containing information relevant to the roles and responsibilities of governors and their clerks

  • advice and guidance on the interpretation of legal and policy requirements

  • comprehensive training programme for new governors and clerks

  • range of training (approximately 45 events over the year) enabling governors and clerks to develop their expertise

  • access to webpages with a range of updated resources

  • access to discounted rates for GovernorHub (online tools supporting the work of your governing board).

Emergency clerking can be purchased for an additional cost as and when required.

The full range of our service is detailed in the catalogue sent electronically to chairs of governors, clerks and Headteachers in January 2020.
